Beth Israel and Jordan Hospital Receive Approval to Formalize Corporate Alliance
Under the full corporate affiliation agreement, BIDMC will make strategic investments to help expand Jordan Hospital’s primary care physician network and clinical capabilities. We will work jointly to ensure the success of Jordan Hospital’s strategic, financial and operational plans. Our goal is to give patients better access to a fuller spectrum of community care and access to a Harvard-affiliated academic medical center with world-renowned tertiary care, research and teaching programs.
WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC TERMS OF THE AGREEMENT?
Jordan Hospital will become part of the BIDMC family of hospitals and retain its own license, local management, and board governance. This is the same relationship that BIDMC has with its Milton and Needham hospitals.
Under the agreement, BIDMC will become the sole corporate member of Jordan Hospital. BIDMC will have three representatives on Jordan Hospital’s Board; Jordan Hospital will also have representation on the BIDMC Board of Directors.
Jordan Hospital’s Board will continue to oversee the hospital’s strategic planning and day-to-day operations. BIDMC and Jordan Hospital will work together on strategic, financial and operational plans, and BIDMC will make significant capital investments to help expand Jordan Hospital’s primary care physician network and clinical capabilities.
WHY DID JORDAN HOSPITAL DECIDE TO FORM AN ALLIANCE WITH BIDMC?
Becoming part of BIDMC will allow Jordan Hospital to maintain comprehensive, high quality, cost efficient care for the community; we will remain competitive in our service region; and we’ll get stronger support with medical staff recruitment, education and development to successfully navigate ongoing healthcare reforms. JHSI was attracted to an affiliation with BIDMC because the institution is a patient care, teaching and research affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and is also known as a high quality and highly efficient medical center with a deep reputation for compassionate care. Also, under terms of the agreement, JHSI will continue to maintain its not-for-profit status. Simply put, it will help us grow and be successful in the future.
HOW WILL THIS NEW ALLIANCE BENEFIT PATIENTS & THE REGION?
This alliance will be a significant benefit to patients in this community – providing access to world-class academic medical care, right here in Plymouth. Independent market research shows that patients and potential patients already place a high value on both Jordan Hospital and BIDMC, and feel that both can provide high quality health care. At the same time, we know that patients want a strong link to tertiary services at an academic medical center in Boston, should they need it. This is the best of both worlds for patients. BIDMC – a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School – and Jordan Hospital, working together, will enhance and expand programs in the community.
WILL THERE BE ANY CONSOLIDATION OF SERVICES?
There will be no change in day-to-day operations. Jordan Hospital will retain its separate license and independent medical staff, who will join the Beth Israel Deaconess Care Organization. Day-to-day operations will continue under the Jordan Hospital senior leadership and the oversight of the Board of Directors – some of whom will have new reporting relationships to BIDMC counterparts. However, there will be an expansion of clinical offerings at Jordan Hospital to ensure the continued ability serve the clinical needs of the southeastern Massachusetts market.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT FOR JORDAN HOSPITAL FROM THIS AFFILIATION?
BIDMC, Jordan Hospital and our physicians share the philosophy that it is fundamental to today’s health care environment to be able to deliver the right care at the right place at the right time. Jordan Hospital will continue to provide high quality care in the community when that is the right thing to do – supplemented by the resources and expertise from a major downtown medical center. Additional resources will be available to recruit and retain primary care physicians, which in the long term, will provide a stronger platform for Jordan Hospital and the patients who have come to rely upon and trust us for their healthcare needs. Additionally, we will jointly plan for new or enhanced clinical programs at Jordan Hospital.
WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT FOR BIDMC FROM THIS AFFILIATION?
Likewise, BIDMC and its physicians believe that delivering high quality complex care is at the core of what an academic medical center should provide. Having very strong links to a lower cost, high-quality community hospitals keeps care in the community when appropriate and helps keep health care costs under control. That philosophy is at the core of BIDMC’s strategic direction.

WHAT ABOUT JORDAN’S FINANCIAL HEALTH?
Jordan Hospital’s financial position and performance is sound today. But the health care environment in this country demands that we seek new models of care delivery, as reimbursement models change and there is more focus on keeping communities healthy. We believe Jordan Hospital will be strengthened by this new corporate relationship as BIDMC and Jordan Hospital build a solid working relationship. BIDMC supports the growth of Jordan Hospital’s primary care physician base and opportunities to provide care for patients in the community when appropriate.
HAVE CURRENT MARKET CONDITIONS INFLUENCED THE HOSPITALS’ DECISION TO FORM A CORPORATE AFFILIATION AT THIS TIME?
It is hardly a secret that the nation is looking for ways to deliver care more efficiently and in a more cost effective way. We – and many others – are looking at ways to provide the best care in the most efficient way. It is better for patients and it is better for society. A corporate affiliation between Jordan Hospital and BIDMC mirrors the values espoused by recent efforts to control healthcare costs. The partnership will help us give patients the right care in the right place at the right time.
HOW DOES ATRIUS/SOUTH SHORE MEDICAL FIT INTO THE AFFILIATION?
Atrius Health is a non-profit alliance of six physician groups working on ways to transform the delivery of healthcare in eastern and central Massachusetts. Jordan Hospital is expanding its relationship with Atrius and will become a preferred hospital for inpatient care, some hospital-based specialty care and emergency department needs. BIDMC and Atrius have forged a close clinical relationship that ensures patients receive the highest quality care in the most appropriate setting closest to their home, including patients of the Atrius Health groups on the South Shore. Atrius is supportive of this opportunity to work with the community provider as part of the BIDMC network.
WHAT ABOUT SHARED ELECTRONIC MEDICAL INFORMATION?
Shared electronic records are vital to a high quality network, and BIDMC and its partners have led the way in this regard. Under the agreement, electronic links will be put into place to allow currently separate electronic medical record systems to work together. This will mean Jordan Hospital clinicians can view BIDMC’s web-based online medical records directly from the MEDITECH system and BIDMC clinicians will be able to view Jordan Hospital data in their own system, as well as be linked for care for Atrius patients.
DOES BIDMC HAVE THE CRITICAL MASS ON THE CLINICAL SIDE TO COMPETE WITH PARTNERS AND STEWARD?
Yes. BIDMC has long been one of the great academic medical centers in the country. And now, it has built a very strong network of high quality community hospital and physician partnerships, characterized by high clinical quality, lower cost structures, and a shared set of values in how we care for patients and communities. BIDMC has its own niche, and exactly the right ingredients to be successful in today’s health care environment.
BIDMC maintains an important space in the Boston health care market, although our business model is different from others in allowing our participating hospitals and physician groups to decide whether to participate in joint contracting and risk-sharing opportunities through the Beth Israel Deaconess Care Organization. In addition to the full corporate relationships we enjoy with BID-Needham and BID-Milton, we have strong clinical affiliations with four other high quality community hospitals – Lawrence General and Anna Jaques, Cambridge Health Alliance and Signature Health. And we are proud to work closely with Atrius Health and Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology.
But there is another element that is equally if not as important as size – and that is quality. BIDMC is proud to have recently won the American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize for its commitment to quality improvement. That honor comes on top of regular recognition by The Leapfrog Group, Truven Health’s Top 100 Hospitals and US News & World Report. Jordan Hospital is proud to have been nominated by US News & World Report as a top hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Also, it has received distinction from the American Heart Association with the Stroke Gold Plus Award and has been identified as a Center of Distinction for Orthopedic Care by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
