Walter Friend

“Dr. Eric Johnson saved my life 13 years ago.
We are proud to make a donation to Jordan’s
cardiovascular program in honor of him. Cynthia and
I believe strongly that having a complete cardiac
program in place in this area is a very important
thing for this community.”

    Did you know...?
    • Since 1918, cardiovascular disease has been the No. 1 killer in the United States.

    • Of the 71 million Americans with cardiovascular disease, 27 million are age 65 or older. The U.S. Census estimates that there will be 40 million Americans age 65 or older by year 2010, which suggests a rapid increase in chronic diseases, including coronary artery disease, heart failure and stroke.

    • Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of American women. Although men have heart attacks and strokes more often, the death rate for women is higher. Heart disease causes one death per minute among women.

    Collaborative Care for Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease is the nation’s biggest killer, but excellent care close to home can help you beat the odds. That’s why the Jordan is investing in its new Cardiovascular Center, offering advanced care that will be convenient and easily accessible. The hallmark of the Jordan’s Cardiovascular Center will be its multidisciplinary approach to evaluating and treating patients with heart disease and/or arterial and venous disorders.

Dr. Scott James, our vascular surgeon will be able to detect and treat many conditions non-surgically in the cath lab. He will do this through small catheters that are led to the site of disease using the specialized Philips imaging equipment. These minimally invasive procedures will replace what now requires a surgery. We plan to offer a comprehensive service consisting of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that can treat a variety of disorders including peripheral vascular disease and renovascular disease.

Cardiac Catheterization What is Cardiac Catheterization?

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure used to diagnose and determine the best treatment for patients with various forms of heart disease. A catheterization lab has specialized equipment that allows instant moving images of the heart. During the procedure, the patient is mildly sedated. A very thin plastic tube (catheter) is guided through a leg or arm vein and up to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, the physician injects a dye to track blood flow while cameras move around the chest area. The physician takes pictures of the arteries and the main pumping chamber to thoroughly map blood flow through the heart. After the diagnostic catheterization test is complete, the cardiologist reviews the images to determine if there is a narrowing or blockage of vessels requiring further treatment. The cardiologist then discusses the findings with the patient and presents further treatment options, if necessary. No treatment may be necessary, the patient may need a change in medication, or a therapeutic interventional procedure or surgery may be required.

New and Expanded Cardiovascular Services at Jordan Hospital

The special care your heart requires for diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of cardiovascular disease, will be enhanced and available close to home, including diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Renovation of the former surgical space is underway and will provide a 10,000 square-foot area to house our new Cardiovascular Center, including the new catheterization lab and other new technology and related advanced services – all in one convenient location on the Hospital’s first floor. The Center is expected to welcome its first patients in early 2007. The construction project, new technology, expanded programs and new services will cost approximately $7 million.

Philips Allura Xper FD20Jordan Hospital’s new Philips Allura Xper FD20 Imaging equipment, one of the only systems of its kind available in this region, will allow clinicians to perform cardiac catheterizations and vascular procedures.

Jordan Hospital’s cardiac services combine physician expertise and experience with high quality care to detect and treat cardiac problems. The Jordan’s clinical affiliation with Boston Medical Center responds to our community’s need for access to a full continuum of specialized care for our cardiac patients and their families. Invasive and interventional cardiologists from Boston Medical Center will be at the Jordan several days per week to perform diagnostic cardiac catheterization. This partnership will provide clinical expertise and the ability to participate in evidence-based practice, thus creating an environment for the growth and advancement of our cardiovascular program.
